Arsenal’s new GREEN away kit available today!

There have been very few good things said about the design of the 125th anniversay away kit (Out today!) but there are some good recycling messages in what is probably the green-est football kit in the world!

As its supposed to represent 125 years of Arsenal football club, even the badge is recycled from old sixpences. Here is what Arsenal have to say about it: Capturing the spirit and history of Arsenal Football Club, the new away shirt features a specially designed crest to highlight the proud origins of the Club 125 years ago.

The celebratory badge design features 15 laurel leaves to the left side of the Club’s crest to reflect the detail on the reverse of the sixpence pieces paid by 15 men to establish the Club in Woolwich in 1886. The 15 oak leaves to the right of the crest pay tribute to the founders who would meet in the local Royal Oak pub. Underneath the crest is one of the Club’s first recorded mottos – ‘Forward’ – with the anniversary dates of 1886 and 2011 either side.

Not only that but the kit is made out of recycled plastic bottles and you can’t get greener than that! This is what Nike has to say: As part of the Nike Considered Design program, Nike uses discarded water bottles destined for landfill sites in Japan and Taiwan where they can take up to 500 years to decompose. The bottles are placed in a large washing machine to clean them and get rid of labels before they are chopped into tiny flakes and melted down into a yarn that is ultimately spun to make the fabric for the jerseys. This ensures the kits remain the most eco-friendly ever by reducing energy consumption by up to 30% compared to manufacturing traditional polyester, and saving nearly 43 and a half million plastic water bottles from being dumped at landfill sites.

So although the kit is navy blue and turquoise its still very green!
